bbq, anyone?

The other day the kids were playing with Jenga blocks. QQ only took blocks on the toppest layer... hahaha. After playing for one round, they started laying the blocks to build something else.

Amongst other things that they built, this caught my attention. A campfire! HQ must have learnt this from Word World, where frogie went camping with piggy.
And then, I LOL when I saw him doing this...

He took a pencil, pierced it into the hole of a seal squeky toy and is barbequing it over the "fire". And look at his tongue licking his lips... as if he's anticipating to eat the seal! LOL!!!

on dealing with pain and quitting pacifier

Despite all the fuss about HFMD, all in all, I think my kids still had it easy. They merely had mild fever (37.5 - 38.5 celcius) periodically and the ulcers only attacked their mouth. Only spots (not ulcer) appeared on their palms. And they are back to their normal selves again only 4-5 days after diagnosed.

I've heard of much worse symtoms from my friends... high fever, lots of rashes on the palms and feet, as well as ulcers everywhere on the outsides of the mouth too! And my friends plus their family members even got it from their kids. Me? I had only a total of 3 ulcers on my palms, which dried up after a day (not even sure if it's HFMD). There's nothing in my mouth. My dad, mum and hubby didn't feel a pinch. I guess our case of HFMD is a mild one :-).

So we're really lucky... but that did not stop my kids from kicking up a big fuss *shake head*. That shows what Drama King and Queen I have... LOL!

It is interesting to note how differently they dealt with pain. HQ went all quiet and refused to open his mouth. He resorted to all kinds of hand signals and facial expressions to communicate with us... LOL! And twisted and turned his nimble body from getting drinks and food into his mouth. He's the type that will suffer quietly.

QQ on the other hand was all verbal. She wailed and sobbed and whined. She screamed murder everytime we bring anything edible near her. She actually begged not to be given pacifier, something that she needed to lull her to sleep - "I don't want pacifier... please... no pacifier..." But during that time, she did rejected many things as well, including drinks, food, medicine, even ice-creams! And she had nightmares too, would wake 5 to 6 times every night wailing "I don't want!!! My mouth pain!!!"

This picture was taken on Saturday (24 July; 4 days after diagnosed) when she had recovered enough to open her mouth big to be photographed. The ulcers on her tongue was exceptionally big (the red patches). Her tongue was coated with white stuff as we dare not brush her tongue, due to the large ulcers. Instead we wiped with a wet hanky and had her rinsed her mouth with salt water 5 - 6 times a day, forcefully :-(. HQ recovered first followed by QQ. Last Sunday (25 July; 5 days after the kids were diagnosed), although the ulcers on her tongue had not recovered fully, QQ was already feeding herself rice and soup with steamed fish. And even asked for second helping! I'm so glad that it's all over now and the kids are back to their activ selves. So did QQ quit pacifier after she recovered? Fat chance! She insisted for it yesterday, saying that her ulcers got well already *slap forehead*

QQ's birthday outfit

It's my practice to make a birthday dress for QQ for her birthday. You can see her 1 year old dress here, and 2 year old dress here.

I made an outfit for her recent 3 year old birthday. The t-shirt came completed with dainty puffed sleeves ala princess... perfect for the princess tee that I wanted to make for her! I customised the t-shirt with a hand-sewn princess crown, little diamonds and QQ's initials. Her skirt is a tiered twirly skirt. Also handmade :-). She has a hairclip to match too, but she's not wearing it in the picture above because she left it at home (we're at my mum's).
And I have added the skirt into the shop! You can click here to see more details.
In conjunction to nivniv launch, we're having an opening sale till 8 August 2010. Do drop by nivnivhandmade.blogspot.com and check them out ya :-).

Lego

This year, we gave both kids Lego sets for their birthdays. HQ loves to play with his Lego set (and QQ's Lego set). That is if we insist that his tv time is enough for the day; my kids are both tv addicts :-S.

Look how concentrated he is :-). Vehicles he built from his set. This is built from QQ's home set. I really love the details... mailbox with mails, basketball loop, satellite, garrage door that opens and close, lamps. It looked like a real house! As HQ and I were assembling this house, I felt like a kid again :-).
After all these were built, there were still some access lego pieces. HQ made these robots; they were equipped with weapons, he said.
One even had a hugeass cannon!!!
It's really meant to be a cannon, one that is like Captain Hook's, so stop thinking senget, ok! :-P

birthday grandpa & birthday girl

Two of my favourite people celebrated their birthdays last Saturday. My dad and my little darling QQ :-). Dad's birthday was on that Saturday itself, 17 July 2010. QQ's birthday was yesterday, 20 July 2010.

These lego sets were birthday presents from hubby. We realised that it is meant for much older kids (7 and above), but QQ was very attracted to the set that we got for HQ, so we thought this house set will be a nice birthday present for her. The kids play together anyway, so we can assist HQ to build, and they can play together later. In our family, birthdays are often celebrated within the family in a small scale. We went out for dinner at a favourite neighbourhood restaurant and had cake afterwards. Food we had... fried mantis prawns, steamed fish, fish maw soup, sweet & sour meat and mixed vegetables stirfried in belacan sauce (only partly in picture). My brother, the kids' Kiu kiu treated dinner. After dinner, we went to mum's and while waiting for the food to go down, the kids had a drawing and colouring session. Colouring set was Kiu kiu's present to QQ :-). Here's Kiu kiu entertaining the kids with his drawing. Can you guess what is it? A Chinese dragon :-). Later, we got the cake ready... Dad's favourite Secret Recipe carrot and walnut sheet cake.
Blowing candles...HQ wanted to serve us, so he cut the slices, placed them onto plates and served all of us :-). Look how happy Gong gong was :-DI must say, he did a good job serving us one by one... no mess. But with a 5 year old, this is bound to happen... he licking the cake knife :-P... kids are so spontaneous :-D.

3

today my little princess turns 3.

3 years just flew by! i so wish that she'll not grow up so quickly; i love this age! (but then again, i think i said that at my kids' every age :-S).

talking about growing up, she can be "I'm a big girl, I'm a tough girl" when she wants her way, or "but I'm still a little girl..." when she wants to be pampered. either way, darling, you ARE my little baby, ALWAYS.

happy birthday, QQ darling! be healthy and strong! we love you very much! don't grow up so quickly ok :-D.
.......................................................................................................................................

We just got back from the clinic... HQ and QQ were the second last patients before the doctor left at 10.30pm. HQ & QQ were diagnosed with HFM (hand, foot & mouth) :-(. HQ's condition was worse than QQ... sooooo many ulcers, especially under his tongue. Guess he got it back from school last week. Good thing is QQ is still playful and eating. HQ only wanted soup. *sigh* what a way to usher QQ's birthday...

happy birthday, Gabriel :-)

Gabriel is my nephew, my sis' firstborn. Today, Gabriel turns 5 :-).

Although my kiddos do not get to see Gabriel often, they are very fond of him. He's a smart little boy with a very lively personality. Very cheeky too ;-).

Gabriel & HQ:
He's crazy about Animal Kaiser at the moment, and last school holidays, got HQ hooked as well. Gabriel could yak and yak non-stop about the characters on these cards; very amusing and he impressed me with the detailed descriptions :-)

Gabriel, Raphael, HQ & QQ:
Here's wishing you a Very Happy Birthday, Gabriel. May you grow up healthy and strong and may all your wishes come true :-).

* Thanks, Frederick (my BIL) for the beautiful photos.

desserts... who doesn't love them?

I think most kids love desserts. My kiddos are no exception... so much so that when they are in a restaurant (any restaurant), the first page that they turn to is the drinks and desserts page. Wooo... they will be discussing animatedly and fighting over who gets to order what. Oogle at the pictures and pick whichever that fancies them. Doesn't matter what we order for their main, their focus is the DESSERTS. Working this to our advantage, we set a rule that they have to finish their main meals before they indulge in their chosen desserts. So they eat super fast :-D.

HQ chose an ice-cold drink of pickled lemon and sour plum juice (not a dessert actually, but we only allow him to drink after meal, so it's treated like one :-))QQ's choice was healthier; little bits of mango, honeydew and sago in shaved mango ice
If we let them, they will finish up the desserts and lap the bowls clean. And cough their lungs out afterwards, especially QQ. So we set another rule... they have to share their desserts with us... haha!

See how much they enjoy them. QQ and her baobei (precious) HQ also had a share of QQ's shaved mango ice.
Do your kids love ice-cold drinks or desserts? Do you bribe them like we do? :-P

do we look alike?

My family (mum, dad, grandma, aunties) often say QQ looks like me when I was a child.

Just for trivial fun, I did a few side-by-side here... you be the judge ok? ;-)

In this picture, QQ was 5+ months old. The insert is a picture of my maternal side grandma and me; I think I was about the same age as QQ in the picture. My grandma looked after me when I was little. She's now residing in Singapore with my uncle and 6 grandkids. I haven't seen her for so long *sob*.
This is a recent photo of QQ... 2 years 11 months old. The insert is me at about 4 years old at my paternal side grandpa's house (with a very dorky boyish hairstyle :-D). Hubby said QQ and my smiles look alike here. I think our eyes too. This photo of QQ is taken on the same day as above. I think I was about 5-6 years old in the picture. I think this is the most look alike photo of all.
What do you think? Do we look alike? :-)

the art of war

This according to HQ was an army school.
(I think he meant army training centre or something like that :-))

A place where the soilders stay, train and do all their soldiers work.
(I was trying to figure out what soldiers work mean exactly)
He mentioned about alarm systems, some automatic lock systems and was describing how they work together. And nearby, QQ was building what she called a Princess Castle. HQ, the opportunist jumped to that opportunity and offered to protect the King and the Queen with his army.
QQ protested that it is the Princess Castle and not the King and Queen's.
HQ was rather disappointed. Where the army trained, HQ set up a little space with rows and rows of blocks and plastic cubes. He explained that these were soldiers arranged according to their different levels of "power" (or prowness). This was the position they assumed in case the enemy comes to attack.

(I think we shouldn't let him watch with us ancient war-themed movies; Red Cliff, 3 Kingdoms, etc. But that was soooooo long ago... how could he remember???) And this... was the spaceship, the strongest weapon (I assume it's an ultimate weapon). HQ was very detailed... according to him, the 3 blocks behind held down the spaceship and would be released when it takes off. The spaceship was very powerful and "will destroy all the enemies" or "can fly the King and Queen to a safe place even out to the outerspace". (I liked the architecture of the spaceship... but, again... I think he may have watched too much Star Wars too...)© Lee Pei Yi. All rights reserved. Originally published for boeyjoey.blogspot.com. an attempt...

to imitate QQ's signature pose...jadi tak? :-P

Updated:
Adui... Nizaa commented that QQ had 2 peace signs and I had only one. And Claire said that she had something in her mouth, I had none...

Ok ok... so this one how?
jadilah kot...

Update 9 July 2010:
Do we look alike?
My family (mum, dad, grandma, aunties) often say QQ looks like me when I was a child. But friends commented there's no resemblance at all! So I mai copy her pose and put our photos side by side lor... looks like no one say we look alike leh...

Ok Ok... I go and dig my budak-budak picture and put our photo side by side! Then you tell me whether we look alike or not! :-D.

my little guy...

My little guy loves collecting momentos... tickets to his first movie, the box from his birthday Happy Meal, his first colouring contest that he took part in Jusco when he was 3+ (more of I did the colouring, he decided which colour to colour what), a note that Gong Gong wrote for him and his meimei... and many of the same sorts, he has loads of them!!! He's my sweet little sentimental romantic kind of guy :-).

And he loves giving us surprises with little gifts too :-).

The other day, I was mentioning to hubby that I didn't want to wear the Phiten Rakuwa necklace on a daily basis anymore. I couldn't feel its effects any longer, and that I'm looking for another necklace to wear. HQ must had heard what I said, and when I came back from work that day, I was greeted with this: Completed with a matching ribbon that he found from a paperbag and asked mum to tie on. I must say he has good colour co-ordination, and he made it really presentable :-).

What's inside? A loose glass pendant that he found in the drawer which he looped with a string from his wisel, and asked Popo to tie a knot. I was so touched!!! :') Although it's all recycled materials (come on, how can a little 5 year old go out shopping? and with no pocket money?), I loved the thoughts behind the gift :-D.
......................................................................................................................................

And when we were in Avilion last school holiday, we found this on meimei's pillow. With HQ's handwriting. It was only the resort brouchures, but it's the generosity that moved me. I'm sure he intended to keep those brochures to himself (being a sentimental who collects momentos and all), but he was generous enough to give them to his sister :-). With no transport to go shopping and no pocket money to spend on gifts, I think he's pretty creative. Last year he gave a matching set of Elmo and Cookie Monster soft toys (his own from his own toy box) to his Gong Gong and Popo's birthdays. Sometimes we receive a few pieces of biscuits wrapped in tissue paper sealed with a sticker, a practical stack of tissue tied with a ribbon for Papa, pieces of cartoon stickers, and sometimes sweet little notes of "I Love You" :-). He even wrote some "I Love You" notes to us on behalf of his meimei :-). We all love his gifts :-). It's about his sincerity, his creativity and his honest intention to make us happy that really touched us. I love you too, son :-).
