my girl girl...

My baby girl who's going to Primary 1 next year believes in Santa and I'm glad that she still does :-).

Her absolute trust. Her innocence. Her believe in all things magical. Her stories of fairies, mermaids, wizards and pixies. Her make believe princesses, baker boys, unicorns, and talking pets. Baking magical treats for sale and gifts. Songs that she writes. Dance moves that she wriggles. Happy thoughts that she bubbles about. Ideas whispered with a mischievous glint in her eye.

Oh how I wish time freezes at this moment where her feelings so true, words so ready and thoughts so pure. Our one to one moments that I treasure dearly. Moments that i will also miss sorely when she starts Primary 1 in less than 2 weeks. My baby girl is growing up too fast !

QQ's birthday (back-dated)

Our darling QQ turned 6 on 20th July :-). She's funny, playful, happy and incredibly sweet. Loves to be princessy but very much a tomboy too :-). May you grow up healthily, safely, happily and with abundance of love. Happy birthday sweetheart :-).

It was a happy occasion with a simple celebration with her teachers and classmates at kindy, followed by a school field trip to Vitagen factory the next day.

On the actual day, which was a Saturday, we did not do much of a celebration because HQ needed to attend two Robotics classes on that day (one regular classs and one special training) and another training on Sunday (and many many weekends to come *faint*), in preparation for the coming Robotics competitions. So while HQ was sweating it out at school, we went for a fun outing at Leisure Mall and QQ's favourite dessert of Snowflake.

After HQ's two classes, we went swimming, and later dinner at a restaurant of QQ's choice. It was a simple celebration yet QQ was very happy about it :-).

QQ and her mama-made cupcakes during the kindy celebration.
Up close of the simple milk cupcakes that QQ helped to prepare. QQ's classmates said they were very yummy :-)

QQ and her cute classmates. Where are the boys???

Waiting for QQ's favourite desserts.

Dinner at QQ's choice of restaurant.

Birthday cake of her choice; blueberry cheese.

QQ's birthday present. Present was chosen a few months before her birthday, I think it was April or May. Picture was also taken then. She was good to let us keep it before her birthday, and only started playing with it on her birthday :-).

:')

When QQ started kindy at 4, she has been telling everyone that she wanted to be a teacher when she grows up. She said that she really liked teaching little children like her Teacher Ragesh.

As she grows older (5+), she wanted to be a scientist. She became very curious about why certain things happen in a certain way, especially mechanical things. She said she wanted to find out how things work, and to invent better things (from there).

Now as she's approaching 6, she surprised me one evening as we were on our way to fetch HQ from school. As i was driving along, she was talking and I absent-mindedly replied her in monosyllables.

My ears perked up when she told me: "Mama, I want to be just like you when I grow up. I want to be a home mama and look after my children."

She went on and on about having 8 children (!!!), deciding what home to buy to house her big family (a bungalow), which car to buy to fit everyone (she decided on a mini bus in the end haha), enlisting my help to look after her kiddos :-))), clothes, food, school, and a lot of other things.

Maybe it's just a childish notion, nothing more, and I won't be surprised if she tells me some of her other ambitions as she grows older. However, hearing her going on and on about being just like me touched me immensely and tears started rolling down my cheeks. I mean, of the years when I worked in corporate, she had admired the make-up that i put on, clothes and accesories that I wore, but never once she said she wanted to be like me. Now as a sahm, clad mostly in simple tees and shorts (or jeans/ skirts & blouse at best), she wanted to be like me!

I didn't ask her why but I like to think that she likes the change in me (happier and more contented), or maybe she enjoys having her mama at home looking after her, so she thinks her children would too :').

chitter-chatter

Some of our kiddos' conversation that I want to keep notes on... will be good for laughs when they read these in their teens :-).

One evening over dinner, I was lamenting to hubs on how as I grow older, my metabolism has gone down and I gain weight more easily. HQ who was listening, commented a matter-of-factly:

HQ: Being fat is good. That way, when you're old and you die, there will be more for the maggots to eat. And the ground where you will be buried in will be more fertilized.

How morbid @@

Hubs and I were talking and QQ heard us mentioned the term 'Country Manager'.

QQ : Is Country Manager a Prime Minister?

Thinking of it, she's quite right. A Prime Minister does lead and manages the country, doesn't he/ she?

QQ has suddenly lost interest in eating avocado (used to be one of her favourite fruit and she could finish one whole fruit in one seating). I was trying to encourage her to eat it again.

Me: Just try to eat one quarter alright? I'll eat the rest.
QQ: No. I don't want any of it.
Me: Why? You used to love it so much.
QQ: My life has changed. Things that I liked last time, I don't like anymore. Things that I don't like last time, I like them now. So please don't ask me to eat anymore. Thank you.

teachers' day baking (belated post)

As mentioned in previous post, I did some baking for my kiddos' teachers on Teachers' Day. For QQ's teachers, I made marble cakelets, and wrapped them up with a few other things that QQ chose - small booklets and pens.

For HQ's teachers, who celebrated Teachers' Day a week later, i baked small loaves of cranberries lemon cake. Everytime i bake this cake, everyone who tried it would be raving about it heehee. I especially love the crumbly texture and lovely citrus taste. This cake never disappoints :-).

I love baking little treats like these, and should be doing the same for next year. Next year will be easier, because QQ will be starting the same school as HQ, so just need to do one batch baking :-).

Photos are copied from my FB page, so look kind of small here.

HQ turns 8 :-)

Our firstborn turns 8 today. Since like just yesterday the first time I held him in my arms. From an active, alert and incredibly cute baby, he blossomed into a responsible, intelligent, cheeky and playful as well as a thoughtful little boy. He's mature for his age and very much in love with life <3.

Happy Birthday my darling boy. May you be blessed with good health, happiness, safety and abundance of love always. Please remember that we love you very very much and always will <3<3<3

Pic 1 - we prepared small favors for HQ's classmates on Friday, consisting of homemade chocolate cupcakes and some small titbits. HQ told me that his friends said the cupcakes tasted very yummy :-). During recess on the same day, I packed a few McDonald's value meals for HQ be shared with his close friends. He said it's one of his best school day :-)

Pic 2 - on his actual birthday (today), we went swimming, followed by lunch at McDonald's (again!) upon his request.

Pic 3 - for his birthday present, he only requested for a monopoly set, and so hubby got him a twin set of monopoly and scrabbles. Just what he wanted :-)

Pic 4 - dinner at a restaurant of his choice.

Pic 5 - after all the baking for teachers' day (will post pics later) and cupcakes for his classmates, we brought HQ to a bakery to choose his birthday cake. This cake would be my target to achieve next year, to bake one like this standard for my kids' birthday :-)))

Although the celebration was simple, we're happy that HQ is a happy camper :-D

happy mothers' day 2013

13 May 2013
QQ - 5y 9m old

Happy Mother's Day cards from both kids, and a special letter from QQ. She said it's a song that she composed, but when I asked her to sing for me, she said she have not thought of the tune yet. Haha; funny girl

ahem...

11 May 2013
QQ - 5y 9m

Saw these on the way to lunch. Hubs asked the kids:
Hubs: do you know what these are?
QQ: Bra!!!

She then explained how to make it: "You tie a string at the middle to join the two coconut husks. And then you tie two strings at the sides (of the coconut husks). Then you hold the bra to your body and tie the strings behind. Can also use shells, one enough already because got 2 shells in one scallop ma. Then you can wear the shells bra like a mermaid."

my newborn niece

May 10, 2013
QQ - 5y 9m old

This is way back-dated but I want to note this important occasion - my brother just had his firstborn, a daughter! Yay! Now there's 2 girls in the family :-).

QQ was smitten! Here's a first photo with baby. See the note on the crib? QQ's first fan letter to baby! :-D

This is another note that she wrote. Too eager to see baby after school, QQ slipped a note under my sil's room door :-)

HQ's little invention

3 May 2013
HQ - 7y 11m old

Something that HQ put up while having dinner today with a sauce plate, a 100 plus pop tab and some food scrap... a fly trap! He would have tied a piece of string to the pop tab too, but he couldn't find one, so he slid a chopstick next to it in the end :-D.

Baba's birthday

Happy birthday, baba! Happy birthday, hubby!

We had a scrumptious dinner at our new favourite Japanese restaurant on a birthday weekend after the kiddos' swimming session. We always order the salted grilled fish, ebiko sushi, karaage, and tempura udon when we're there. Hubs loves their sashimi set. Add another chicken set meal, and we're too full already haha.

On the exact date of hubs' birthday, which is on a weekday, we went for dinner right after fetching HQ from school. It was a simple but happy meal at Old Town White Coffee :-).

And the third pic shows some simple cupcake that I made for hubs. It was my first time whipping buttercream, and it turns out delicious! I quite enjoyed spreading the cream over the cupcakes; messy but fun :-). The wording on the cakies are supposed to be purple colour but it looks like grey... hmmm...

Happy birthday honey! Here's wishing you good health, happiness, and a blessed long life ahead :-D

drama queen

15 April 2014
QQ - 5y 8m old

A series of messages fr QQ to her Baba... Baba has been telling her to finish up her kindy homework after her lunch & bath, but little ms. dilly-dally always leave it till last minute. This evening, upon seeing her Baba driving into the car porch, she rushed to write these messages to Baba...

Page 1

Page 2

Page 3

What I found most interesting is the way she wrote down her relationship with her father (Child and Child to). I think, by writing this, she hoped, will bring down her Baba's anger (if there's any). Kind of like reminding her Baba that she's his child so be kind to her. Hahahaha

PS: Her spelling is terrible; but she's 5 so I didn't correct her :-).

singapore trip @ 2012 (back-dated)

Just pictures :-)

A visit to the zoo is a must for my kiddos. Sis BIL brought us there; the kids had a great time with their cuzzies, G &R :-D

While we were in Singapore, Rafa and QQ attended a Craft Workshop for 2 days, organised and taught by my Sis' buddy. We hung out in the mall and public library nearby. I was impressed with how organised and convenient the libraries are. Here's Rafa playing at the park after his workshop :-).

QQ got her wish at last to go for the Duck Tour!

The Merlion seen from the Duck Tour.

We also went to the Gardens by the Bay, which was essentially 2 HUGE greenhouses with monitored tempreture. They were lovely and impressive. Here's what they call the supertrees.

The first greenhouse that we went to was the Flower Dome. Our cheeky kiddos :-)

Beautiful foliage:

Pictures taken at the second greenhouse, the Cloud Forest. Here's the fall:

As we were in Singapore for 7 days, it was a leisurely trip. Unlike previous trips, we took things really slow. Slept more, ate more, shopped more, and did less of sight-seeing. I actually prefer this kind of holiday, less stressful and tiring :-).

On the second day there, Sis drove us to visit Granny. She seemed frail and clueless sometimes, which really broke my heart. The saddest thing was she could not recognize me. The woman whom I respected most since I was a child, the kindest and strongest woman that I knew, the woman who looked after me when I was a child, didn't recognize me :'(. It took her a long time to finally realise who I was. I do so hope I am nearer to her so I can visit her more often.

starting the school year @ 2013

HQ @ Primary 2

This year at 2013, HQ is attending his second year of school in a Chinese medium primary school. He loves his new status as a Primary 2 student, and was on his own from the first day of the school year :-).

This year when school restarts for Primary 2, he asked for a raise @@. He asked once, and we explained to him why we will not be doing what he asked. He's fine with that, although this year he didn't save as much money. Guess he's a bigger boy now and eats more :-).

His favourite thing about school is still time spent with friends especially during breaks in canteen, and games played during PE. His good group of friends are same as last year; Thye Chee Sheng, Soh Vincent, Jason Leong, and Harry Chong. His closer girl friends are Fong Min Syuan, Low Kor Yee, Low Ye Xuan and Low Yan Wen. I find it very cute that these kids call each other full names :-).

QQ @ K2

Year 2013 will be the last year of QQ attending kindy. This year seems like no difference as last year; the routine ting xie, ejaan and spelling; the same friends, almost similar teachers.

She will be joining her Korkor at the big school next year. She seems to be both excited and terrified to be going to Primary 1 next year. I don't blame her, as I too feel very worried about how she's going to cope with the tight discipline of a Chinese school. It seems that my littlest baby is growing too fast!

HQ's first year of school @ 2012 - curricular activities

Just some updates on the curricular activities that HQ has been participating.

HQ partakes in the following activities, which is very little compared to many of the kids I know :-). These are some of the updates:

Robotics
Held weekly and he loves attending this class very much. In year 2012, he has been selected to compete in a 3-day event among kids as senior as primary six, and he was awarded for his outstanding performance. He also attended a 2-day camp during the school hols and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Swimming
He only started lessons this year 2013. We actually enrolled him mid last year but was not satisfied with the instructor. It took us some time to look for another swimming school at a convenient slot. He now loves his lessons and look forward to it every weekend :-).

Wushu
HQ started learning wushu from school somewhere in July 2012, i think. The weekly practice of wushu has made him sturdier in terms of muscle mass, and his growth in height seems to be slowing down. He catches up the moves pretty fast and loves this sport immensely :-)

Just after 2 months of joining, HQ took his first wushu examination, which was held annually. His Sifu who was judging the examination commented to her SiJie (an elder girl disciple who teaches the beginners): "This little boy here fights like a little monk; he has great strength!".

Little monk; LOL!

Others
HQ was also awarded 2nd prize with a trophy for creative writing in English among his peers :-).

I feel he has grown up so much in the past one year; physically, socially and intellectually. Although, of course, there's still lots of room to grow :-).

I hope he continues loving and excels in his extracurricular activities :-)

optimistic

HQ misplaced something and was searching high and low for it. QQ checked with him on the status:

QQ: So Korkor, have you found it?
HQ: Don't worry, I almost found it.
QQ: What do you mean by "almost found it"?
HQ: I've almost finished searching the whole house, so I know I will find it very soon.

I love his optimism :-)))

my first homemade bread

If you're in my fb friend list, you might have seen these photos. I'm reposting them on this blog to journal my cooking adventure :-)

This cinnamon bread is the first time I attempted to make bread. I baked a large batch and shaped them into muffin pans for easy freezing and reheating.

Delicious when it's hot out of the oven, fresh or reheated. We adults love them! My kids? They don't quite fancy the cinnamon taste so I may try with chocolate filling next :-).
