the birds & the bees

The kids have been asking hubs and I various questions repetitively about how babies came about that we decided to have a session with them. That happened early this year when HQ was still 8 years plus and QQ 6 years plus. Hubs and I did a lot of googling (very quickly!) before we held the session.

They asked a lot of questions and we answered them truthfully. Only when the questions came to the process on how the sperm gets to the ovum that they reacted with utter shock, disbelief and disgust. And for a brief moment, we had to stiffle our laughter. We stressed that this is all science and natural as how god made us. It's easier for our boy to comprehend this as he has learnt how animals mate from nat geo wild, and he helped to explain to his sister o.O". We pointed out that this is only done with your spouse whom you love dearly. We also stressed on taking care of themselves and not let others take advantage of them.

So what's the outcome of the session? They obviously understand the process more. Overall, they have been quite matured about the whole thing. It was easier than we thought ☺. And they have been asking us to 'connect your thingies again' (that's the exact words our boy used) to make another baby brother or sister for them o.O"

Our next challenge will be to explain more complicated issues like chastity, concensous and non-concensous sex, safety and related diseases, etc. Maybe we'll have another 3-5 years to discuss these before puberty hits...

HQ: I wish meimei is not my sister.
Me: Oh... why?
HQ: So that I can marry her
Me:
HQ: Eh no actually, I'm glad meimei is my sister. Because she can be my sister far longer than my wife!

thank you

i'm thankful for her strength
her grace
her optimism
her spirit
although battered multiple times physically, she's stronger each time she came out of it
amazed me
blew me
totally caught me off my guard
i'm thankful she took it better than a man
i'm thankful for her laughter,
her humor
her ability to laugh through it
i'm thankful for who she is...
bruises, cuts and all

being the big korkor

I see this everyday as the kids walk into the school compound after I dropped them off at the gate. Korkor's hand over meimei's shoulders, face close to hers, talking to her. After putting his bags at his station, he helps meimei with one of her bags. When they reach the P1 assembly place (out of my view), according to QQ, big korkor hugs meimei, ruffles her hair or strokes her cheeks before leaving to his own prefect station. QQ will shout a loud "Bye bye korkor!" as he walks away.

All this show of affection without anyone prompting. And despite being seen and teased by his friends . Although they squabble, fight and bicker, these little gestures show the depth of their siblings relationship. Thank you, HQ for being such a wonderful big brother. I will remember these sweet moments forever. I'm sure your lucky little meimei will too :-)

backdated: opening school year @ 2014

HQ was in Primary 3 @ 2014
QQ was in Primary 1 @ 2014

Besides getting ready uniforms, school and stationary supplies for every school year, one very important thing that we need to do is to get a haircut for HQ. For his mandarin medium school requires every boy's hair to be really short, like a little monk's. This year, QQ needs to cut her hair as well, for girls are required to have short hair (like boys). For HQ, it was just a trim, whereas QQ had to do a total makeover (8 inches off).

Both kids, right after their haircuts :-). I like how QQ looks in her new hairstyle; younger and more innocent looking, although cheekier as well :-).

For the album - first day of school. I added a left pocket on all five of QQ's pinafores so she has double pockets to put tissues, hanky and a purse. I think HQ looks very smart with his prefect tie :-).
HQ managed on his own on his first day of the school year, as he had in Primary 2. I was with QQ at school for the first 2 days. Although quite apprehensive with the large school and new environment, she seemed to take things at stride. She waved to me to leave her to be on her own, and stop hovering at her at the door and windows like other parents. So I waited in the canteen.

Here's one photo that I snapped of her, seated at the back, a norm for HQ and herself.

HQ has been very independent since young. Since first day of Primary 1, he packs his own schoolbags everyday. Did his homework independently and only needed occasional help from his Gong Gong on some Mandarin homework. Managed his own weekly ting xie, spelling and ejaan. I was a full time working mother then, so I guess HQ's independence can be a byproduct of that :-).

QQ, on the other hand, is more dependent. Eventhough she's able to pack her own bags and practice her ting xie on her own, she prefers to have me helping her. Maybe it's because I'm physically there to assist her, or she's just a baby in the family :-). Anyhow, she has promised that she'll do her own packing and whatever not all on her own when she enters Primary 2 next year :-).

my little dreamer...

6th March 2014
HQ: 8y 9m old

After school chatter:

HQ: I didn't realize that my teacher called me twice today until Jason nudged me.
Me: Oh, what were you doing?
HQ: I was daydreaming.
Me: *hiding my smile* What were you daydreaming about?
HQ: My future.

I was amused when I learnt the details... Things that I never thought a child his age will be thinking about.

In so many ways, this little guy reminds me of a little me so many years ago. Standing at the balcony of my childhood home, staring ahead at faraway lands, of rolling hills & cottony clouds. Building castles in the air...

chinese new year 2014

As usual, our CNY is celebrated with the family. Simple yet enjoyable. Precious time spent with loved ones.

As usual, Mum cooked up a storm with all our favourite dishes. We always look forward to Mum's opening lunch on the second day of CNY.

Family photo :-). This year is extra special because we have a new addition in our family - my brother's little angel :-D

Cousin Moses and his lovely family came back from the states for CNY. Tai Yee came to visit as well. It was great seeing them again :-).

some of QQ's early school work

Jan 28th 2014.

QQ told me on the way to school : "Mama, I think I'm starting to like school.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear that!

Here's one of her recent school work. I asked her why did she draw herself with long hair when her hair is now short. She said "Oh, I forgot!

Funny girl :-)

Another one of QQ's recent work she did at school - recognizing objects and actions that start wt the alphabet "s".

While colouring the picture, she drew 2 extra objects in the sea. Can you see them? She told me both start with the letter "s".

I guessed 'shark' and 'swim'. I only got 'shark' correct.

The other 's' she said, "She's not only swimming, she's SCREAMING her head off!!!

LOL my funny girl :-D
